The River of My Life

It was a sad moment. The word being spread was, “This area will become a battleground.” We were told to take only the most necessary items and not to over pack the wagons and strain the horses. We should only take a blanket for everyone and a little food. Many people were skeptical. We were warned there would be very little time to prepare. There was no question as to what our families should do. Our families didn’t want to fall into Soviet hands.

Name:

My story depicts my personal journey through life as one who, without consciously thinking of it, always had an abiding trust in God. Life has carefully guided me through the varied experiences I needed to encounter—from the moment of my birth in Romania to fleeing from the onslaught of the Russian Army to living as a refugee in Austria before eventually finding the fulfillment of my family’s dream in America, the land of the free. My guidance took me from love at first sight to a captain’s position in the maximum security prison on Riker’s Island, to seeking truth as a student of meta-physical philosophy to sharing my story with others.

In this poignant story, Matt Elsner vividly describes life in a peaceful German farming village in Romania prior to his people’s 1944 flight from the onslaught of the Russian army. The story of their 48 day flight to safety, but becoming refugees, is gripping and taken directly from his grandfather's daily journal of the flight. You can imagine, no, actually feel, that you are on this journey of sorrow with these people.

The floodgates had burst wide. Questions I never had were demanding answers. How many more ‘sins’ are they condemning people to hell for that aren’t against the laws of God? (If you notice, I still believed in a God of judgment and in hell.)
